About this experience

A theme park standing on a real Maya port

Long before the park, this inlet was Polé. The name comes from the Maya root p'ol, meaning merchandise and trade — and it was one of the most active ports on the entire east coast of the Maya world.

This is where the canoes left from. Pilgrims set out from Polé across the channel to Cozumel to worship Ixchel, goddess of the moon and childbirth. Inscriptions even record political marriages between the rulers of Polé and the lords of Cozumel — this was a place of consequence, not just commerce.

The archaeological remains are still inside the park, and most visitors walk straight past them on the way to the river. We make sure you do not.

The park is genuinely enormous. It runs from 8:30 in the morning until 10:30 at night, and first-time visitors routinely see less than half of it. Planning the route matters more here than at any other attraction on this coast.

  • Float the underground rivers through caves and jungle
  • Walk the original Maya archaeological site inside the park
  • The coral reef aquarium and the sea turtle and macaw conservation programmes
  • Beaches, coves and natural pools
  • Cultural performances, from pre-Hispanic dance to the equestrian show
  • México Espectacular — 300+ performers in the Gran Tlachco theatre

Frequently asked questions

Which ticket should I buy?+

Plus, in almost every case. It includes the buffet lunch, lockers and changing facilities, and the difference in comfort over a fourteen-hour day is significant.

Is one day really enough?+

It is enough if you plan the route. It is not enough if you wander. That planning is the main thing we add here.

Should we stay for the night show?+

Yes. México Espectacular is the single best cultural performance on this coast, and it is included with park admission. It is the reason the day runs so late.

Xcaret, Xel-Há or Xplor?+

Xcaret for culture and variety; Xel-Há for relaxed all-inclusive snorkelling; Xplor for pure adrenaline. Tell us your group's ages and energy and we'll tell you honestly which fits.

Is it good for small children?+

Very. There are shallow areas, gentle rivers, animals and shows. Strollers can be rented on site.

Can we skip the queues?+

Not entirely, but arriving with tickets already arranged and starting at the far end of the park while everyone else queues at the entrance makes a real difference.
