Bull Shark Dive — Observation
Every winter, bull sharks gather off Playa del Carmen — one of very few places in the world where you can meet them at close range without a cage. The first dive takes you to the shark point at twenty-six metres, where you settle on the sand and watch animals two to three metres long move past, unhurried, going about their afternoon. Bait is used to bring them in; the guide handles it, and your part is to kneel still and look. The second dive is a shallower reef dive at around twelve metres — calmer, warmer, and a good way to come back up slowly with what you have just seen. Most people are quiet on the boat afterwards. It is not fear. It is that there is nothing useful to say for a while.
Requirements: Advanced Open Water certification, or equivalent, with at least 25 logged dives. The shark point is at 26 metres and the requirement is set by the operator — we cannot make an exception.
